Standing out is overrated.

We’re so overly concerned about standing out that we’ve forgotten the value of coming together. Finding common ground is undervalued.

Compassion for like-minded people is easy. Kindness for “other” is hard, but worth the effort.

Waiting for us, on the other side of our perceived differences, are depth and connection. That’s the barometer we ought to measure the health of society by — our willingness to extend a hand across the aisle.

Without a vested interest in our collective well-being, like-minded or otherwise, we will continue to hyper-focus on the individual and what we stand to gain from the group.

It’s not our differences that make us miserable; it’s the preoccupation with the self that breeds discontentment, inequality, and complacency. Instead of seeking ways to stand out from the crowd, it’s time to invest our energy into building a healthier crowd.
